Festival Under the Stars
(Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, 2012)
Festival Under the Stars is a set of four handmade zines, case bound and presented as one piece. All of the pictures were made at the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in Oakhills, NY 2012. The four booklets are composed to emulate an improvised musical structure, with the titles of each representing part of the musical form - Head, Solo, Mandolin, and Coda. Head introduces the primary visual themes of the four books; Solo is all photographs made of the landscape and farms surrounding the festival; Mandolin is composed like a waltz, with the pictures coming in groups of three; and Coda (Or Next to the Trash) is all composed of pictures and objects found around the festival grounds and later scanned into the computer, and then these pictures then combined with the lectures and changes of classic Bill Monroe songs. Each of the booklets is printed on Strathmore Windpower Drawing Paper, saddle-stitched, and include a few, small original silver prints loosely held within the binding. Festival Under the Stars is printed in an edition of 15.
