THE FAR FIELD
The Far Field is a simple idea. All the pictures document a field in Danby, just a short distance from Ithaca, NY. Over the course of a years, I visited this field weekly to make photographs. Inspired by the Theodore Rhoetke poem The Far Field, a piece that uses
nature and the seasons as a mirror; in navigating a small space and seemingly banal field, the narrator discovers the infinite possibilities of life. Using this as an influence, over the course of 2025, I've photographed the same field. The philosophy behind these photographs is very basic, but one I still strongly believe; the simplest of circumstances - like documenting the changing seasons of one horizon line - can still provide rich for deep self-reflection and engagement, witnessing another sort of self in an endlessly shifting world. Ultimately, I believe that this seemingly banal field is experiencing the same life I am - one of the 21st century, defined by confusion and chaos - and thus an appropriate reflection for these times.
