By Night
(Or A Wolf Among Wolves)

The photographs in the series By Night (Or A Wolf Among Wolves) were all made in my hometown of Ithaca, NY.  The pictures were made between roughly 2009/10-2013, and were all photographed on winter nights.  The photographs were an attempt to find silence, stillness, and solitude among the harsh landscape of these times.  Ithaca is a small town, so over the years, I'd return to the same sites over again, and thus photographed the passage of time on these landscapes.  Some nights, I'd spend 1-2 hours photographing a small section of land, fully immersing myself in the environment.  For exhibition, the photographs are displayed with multiple prints in one frame - sometimes several photographs of the same space photographed over several years, sometimes all photographs of one space photographed in a night.

The subtitle, A Wolf Among Wolves, comes from a Bonnie Prince Billy song of the same name.  The Bonnie Prince Billy song speaks to a profound sense of solitude and loneliness, but revealed with tremendous sensitivity, beauty, and sadness, much like the feeling I found in making the pictures.
