The work here is from the series “Westward, Home,” an investigation nto the relationships between urban landscapes, photographic history, and personal experience, intertwining memories with themes about place and identity. The project has roots in my earliest photographic experiences; while still a college student, I worked as an intern at the photo department at the Colorado History Museum, an archive that includes photographs commission by the United States Geological Survey, railroad moguls and mining engineers, and a numerous albums assembled by the state’s earliest settlers and prominent families.
After working at the Museum, I moved East to pursue a professional life as a photographer. Fifteen years later, I returned to Colorado, and saw it in an entirely new light, recognizing the unique attributes of its landscapes and also the personal history encoded within them. I immediately knew that I needed to make photographs. These resulting pictures were developed over 7-years, between 2016-2023 when I embarked on a journey to document Colorado’s evolving landscape and my personal connection to it. The project, influenced by early photographers like William Henry Jackson, Laura Gilpin, Robert Adams, and Timothy O'Sullivan, aims to capture my own biography in Denver and its surrounding landscapes while also examining broader cultural and historical narratives about the American West.
