On Friday November 27, 2020, I participated in a group discussion with Sosiologi14, an arts organization based in Bandung, West Java. The discussion was an opportunity to look back on my 2017 exhibition and publication, Identity Crisis: Reflections on Public and Private Life in Contemporary Javanese Photography. Organized by Javanese writer and curator Aminudin TH Siregar, the discussion included moderator Ni Nyoman Vidhyasuri Utami, myself, and three of the artists included in the exhibition at the Johnson Museum - Wimo Ambala Bayang, Deden Durahman, and Arum Tresnaningtyas Dayuputri. Primarily conducted in Bahasa Indonesia, the discussion is available below or on YouTube.
In early 2020, I was contacted by Jiazazhi Books to help with research on an exhibition about Southeast Asian photography books. The interview is included below. I recently did an interview with the Voice of America, Indonesia. I was invited to speak about my work and history in Indonesia, and to discuss my coming book A History of Photography in Indonesia: Essays on Photography from the Colonial Era to the Digital Age. The interview is in Indonesian, and available online.
In December 2019, I published a chapter from my forthcoming book A History of Photography in Indonesia: Essays on Photography from the Colonial Era to the Digital Age in Afterimage: Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism (University of California Press. The article is now part of their free content and available online here.
On June 23, I participated in an online event/lecture/discussion hosted by ISI Yogya (Institut Seni Indonesia, Indonesian Institute of Art). The live event was recorded and is now available on YouTube.
I recently published an interview about my work in Indonesia with Catfish Books, a UK based publisher advocating for photography in and about Southeast Asia. The interview is posted here.
At the first of the year, I was commissioned by the United Nations in New York to curate an exhibition of photographs from their archives. The title of the exhibition was Women Wage Peace. It was organized to commemorate some UN initiatives to empower women in post conflict negotiations. The exhibition was up available only for diplomats at the UN Building in New York, and while be recreated in Mali and the Hague. Online documentation for the show is available here.
I am pleased to share the news that for the second time in 3 years, I am returning to the MacDowell Colony. I will be spending 3 and a half weeks at the colony working to finalize one of my next books, A History of Photography in Indonesia: From the Colonial Era to the Digital Age. I hope to share more news about this project and my time at MacDowell soon!
I have several new books in the works, and hope to have information about release dates soon. One of these books, A History of Photography in Indonesia: From the Colonial Era to the Digital Age is now entering the design stage! Hope to have more info to share soon.
